WHAT WE DO > Sustainability Spotlight > Get Green Now

Get Green Now!

In partnership with Kids for a Cooler Planet, we set a goal to virtually eliminate disposable shopping bags -- and the numerous environmental problems associated with them-- in our communities by introducing a convenient, lightweight, sturdy, well-designed, and most importantly, cheap reusable shopping bag. Get Green Now! is our campaign to encourage youth to advocate in their communities for the reduction of paper and plastic bags. With the introduction of reusable bags such as these, Australia, South Africa, Bangladesh, Ireland, Vietnam, the United Kingdom China, Japan, and Taiwan dramatically reduced their consumption of disposable bags in a very short time.

Why NOT Paper or Plastic?
• Plastic bags can take up to 1000 years to degrade, and leave toxins in the soil and water.
• Paper bags create 70% more air and 50 times more water pollutants than plastic bags.
• Plastic bags kill millions of sea creatures a year.
• The United States uses 14 million trees and 12 million barrels of oil per year in the manufacture of shopping bags.
• The United States uses approximately 100 billion plastic bags and 10 billion paper bags each year.
• Less than 5% of bags are recycled nationally.

Green Bags are Great for You and the Environment!
• Hold more than paper or plastic bags
• Lightweight, durable, fold flat, strong handles
• Inexpensive, right now, just $1.00 per bag!
• Non toxic, washable, and water repellent

Why a synthetic rather than a nature fabric?
We believe that the synthetic bags that we are advocating are the best current option for the greatest positive impact on the environment. They are made from polypropylene gas, a by-product of oil refining, and their sturdy removable base is manufactured from recycled material. When they come to the end of their life, they can be recycled. Three main reasons to choose these bags:
• Design: We haven't found any natural fabric bags than fold as flat or are as lightweight. If the bags are a hassle, they won't get used.
• Price: They are MUCH cheaper than natural fabric bags. People actually buy enough of them to hold all of their groceries.
• Environmental Impact: Far fewer natural resources are required to produce a green bag than the hundreds of plastic bags that it will eliminate. Traditional, non-organic cotton commonly used in fabric bags consumes vast quantities of oil needed for pesticides and fertilizer.

Our green bags are good for community members, businesses and the environment!
Why would a business or organization want to be a community partner in this project?

• A business or organization can have its name and logo on the sides of the bag - which will give great exposure. Imagine: hundreds of consumers carrying around these bright green bags every week for YEARS that include the name of the business or organization. It's a terrific marketing scheme!
• The business or organization will be associated with this really great environmental project. Everyone will see these bags and know that it is doing its part to help the environment. The sale of each bag makes a positive difference for future generations.
• A community can join together and put multiple business logos on a bag, which makes a statement about its environmental consciousness and spirit.
• The bags pay for themselves and can even generate income.
